Will the aurora borealis appear above Upstate NY this week? We like our chances.

Can’t get enough of the enchanting aurora borealis?
If so, we come bearing good news: The dazzling northern lights might just visit skies above the Empire State this week.
The aurora is forecasted to be visible across about half of Upstate New York overnight on Thursday, Oct. 3, and Friday, Oct. 4, according to the daily aurora forecast from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s Space Weather Prediction Center. Skies are expected to be partly cloudy Thursday night in Upstate New York, according to the National Weather Service.
So far, Friday looks less promising: The weather service is forecasting mostly cloudy skies and a chance of rain before 11 p.m.
It’s been a lucky year for New Yorkers who dig celestial spectacles.
Along with experiencing a once-in-a-lifetime total solar eclipse, Upstate has enjoyed repeated showings of the aurora borealis — including epic northern lights visits in August and September.
Each appearance has drawn talented photographers into the great outdoors to capture the neon lights dancing above the wilderness at night.
The northern lights are typically most active between 10 p.m. and 2 a.m. For an updated aurora forecast, visit NOAA’s website or the Facebook page for the Space Weather Prediction Center.
